Rob Pruitt’s flea market is coming to the NSU Art Museum in January

In connection with the exhibition Happy!, The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is bringing the Rob Pruitt Flea Market to Fort Lauderdale on January 18-19, 2020. The internationally renowned contemporary artist, whom the New York Times has called one of the world’s most popular provocateurs art, has hosted its nomadic flea markets around the world since 1999 in locations ranging from New York to the Tate Museum in London. Pruitt invites local artists and vendors to sell their products during the two-day event, which will be held at the NSU Art Museum (One East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL).

Taking the form of a traditional open-air bazaar, Rob Pruitt’s flea market is an opportunity to meet artists and take home an original work of art in a relaxed atmosphere. By emphasizing bartering and haggling as both economical and performative, and showcasing a wide range of products from works of art to housewares, the Pruitt flea market blurs the line between art and commerce.

The flea market will be open on Saturday January 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday January 19 from noon to 5 p.m. Entrance is free for the public.

The NSU Art Museum will also feature a conversation with Rob Pruitt and NSU Art Museum Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater on Saturday, January 18 at 2 p.m. Pruitt’s work is currently on display at the NSU Art Museum in the Happy! The conference is free with admission to the Museum. RSVP to [email protected] or call 954-262-0258.

A central point of Happy! The exhibition is a 2013 installation by Pruitt titled US, which features 127 paintings with faces that express the full range of emotions. “These paintings, as the title suggests, represent collective humanity,” notes NSU Art Museum Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater. “The flea market dates back to an earlier period in Pruitt’s career, when direct social interaction between artist and viewer was a prominent feature among many of his peers. The flea market is a work of art performative which is activated by the interaction between artist sellers and spectators. “
