The Walters Art Museum will be celebrating Mexico’s largest cultural festival this year with online and in-person events.

Día de los Muertos, a festival stemming from Aztec culture, takes place on November 1 and 2 of each year.

The holiday, celebrated in Mexico and parts of Latin America and the United States, is an occasion for remembrance and community.

The traditional way to celebrate is to make a ofrenda – an offering – to a deceased loved one.

By November 7, visitors can purchase a ofrenda and bring their offering to the community altar on display at the museum.

The altar was created in partnership with local Baltimore artist Edgar Reyes.

Visitors can also view the “Translations and Transitions / Traducciones y Transiciones” exhibition, a celebration of the independence of Mexico and Central America, until November 7.

The museum also offers online events, such as artistic creation, videos about the works of art from the Ancient Americas collection, and a conversation with Edgar Reyes.

On October 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the museum will host an online community conversation with local artists Jessy Desantis, Alondra Flores and Edgar Reyes.

The artists will discuss the traditions of Día de los Muertos and the role of traditions in their lives.

“As we reconnect and share the arts and culture of so many different communities in Baltimore, we are particularly aware of the loss of life resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic,” Theresa Sotto, Director of Learning and the museum community. engagement, said in a statement.

“We hope that our community altar, or ofrenda, can serve as a public space for people to come together in collective mourning and healing through the arts, ”she said.
