Shinique Smith Preparing Exhibition at Los Angeles Elementary School

On February 9, LACMA will unveil its fifth collaboration with Charles White Elementary School with the exhibition “Shinique Smith: Firsthand.” As part of the museum’s ongoing engagement with its surrounding community, the show combines Smith’s new work based on her experience within the school and community, art produced by Charles White Elementary School students, and objects the artist selected from LACMA’s Costume and Textile collection.

The diverse and eclectic result is an exhibition that draws from the artist’s own childhood memories, elementary school children’s experiments with art, and designs by renowned fashions figures such as Geoffrey Beene and Bill Blass.

“The new work for the show was influenced by the color of an Yves Saint Laurent costume and the energy I absorbed discovering MacArthur Park,” the New York-based Smith explains in the press release. The exhibition will be on view at the Charles White Elementary School through June 8, 2013.
