REDCATCalArts’s downtown center for contemporary art, has a new gallery director and curator. Ruth Estévez, who starts her new position this week, moves to Los Angeles from Mexico City, where she worked as a curator and writer.

From 2007 to 2011, she served as chief curator at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Carrillo Gil before going on to co-found the independent organization LIGA — Space for Architecture, which examines and promotes contemporary architectural practice in Latin America.

She is a contributing writer to Art Nexus and Flash Art. In a press release issued by REDCAT, Estévez says, “I’m very excited about the opportunity to work in the city of Los Angeles, which has such strong links to Latin America.”

Estévez will oversee the exhibition and publication programs at the center located in the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Under Estévez’s leadership, the programming will continue to engage in the art center’s multidisciplinary mission, which includes dance, theater, and the visual arts. Estévez will join associate gallery curator Aram Moshayedi, who has been serving as acting director for the past year.
