Beyond the White Cube: The Best of the New at Art Basel Miami Beach

Each December, the art world heads to Miami for the international art fair Art Basel Miami Beach.  The goal of this 4-day extravaganza is ostensibly to buy, look, talk and think about art.  This year, the fair turned ten and cemented its reputation as the ruckus and slightly inebriated younger sibling of the staid and serious Art Basel in Switzerland.

This week, I decided to take the visit outside the studio and inside the gallery.  Given the title of this series, this is no ordinary gallery visit.

Never one to shy away from bold colors, his brightly-hued palate is all the more powerful in these large works. Amir was kind enough to give us a sneak peak at a brand new series that has yet to be exhibited. And, ever the aesthete, his purple t-shirt fit in perfectly with the blue, purple and pink under (and over) tones of his work!

Beyond the White Cube: Gustavo Godoy, sculptor and mixed-media artist.

When I recently discovered Gustavo Godoy’s work, I quickly added him to my ever-growing “must visit asap” list.  His manipulation of industrial materials is masterful and the concepts he addresses give his body of work incredible depth and nuance.  I’m looking forward to his solo show at Honor Fraser in April 2012.  His studio was amazing, my head practically spun around on my body trying to take it all in.
